At the end of try outs they were calling one person by one person, and since I was the only freshman at Varsity try outs, I was last to be called up to find out what team I was on. We were in the competition gym and we were all in a corner while we waited to go upstairs to go and talk to the Varsity coach, the JV coach, and the JV assistant coach, who were all sitting at a table just waiting to talk to us.
After about 30 minutes I was the last one in the corner and he was still talking to the girl in frond of me. I was almost guaranteed I wasn't going to make the team because the Varsity coach said he only wanted 12 girls on the team, and I already counted 10 returning players and I knew that 2 more already made it because I was texting them. Also the girl in front of me looked like she was smiling so i figured she made the team too. That leads them to 13 players, already one more than what he wanted. So why would he put me on the team too? I kept looking at the clock, just to see how much time has gone by. Waiting impatiently it was finally my time to go up to see if I made it.
As I was walking up the stairs I heard them whispering, I wondering what it was about, even though i figured it would be about me. I finally make it to the top of the stairs, and walk over to the table and have a set. I felt like my head was going to explode. The coach asks me if I'm nervous, I try not to show it but truthfully say yes. His response is "good". Then he starts to talk about my playing, he says that he really liked my effort. I just nod my head as he keeps going. "I like it so much, I want you on Varsity," he continues. My mouth drops, keeping a smile. I can barely breathe, but I manage to ask "really?!??!" he responds "yeah!?!?!" going along with the tone in my voice. The JV coaches start telling me to breathe, I just laugh. After that we go down stairs to the team room and start talking about practices, then we are off.
When I get home I want to try to fake my parents out, and pretend to be extremely sad, but it was too hard to get the smile off my face and put a frown there. So my parents knew right away that I made the team. I started to tell them the story of what happened, getting a bigger and bigger smile on my face as I kept going. The same smile comes to my face when I talk about it still.
